Why it matters
In Japanese, a sentence that turns twice with the contrastive particle が (〜だが、〜するが、) leaves the reader unsure which way it finally points. Only the conjunctive が is counted, not the case particle (私が).
What it does not flag
Only the conjunctive が, outside 「」. The case particle が (私が), the causal が of が故に and がために, が after a volitional (あろうがあるまいが), a が that ends the sentence, and けれど / けど are not counted.
