Number without its unit

number-without-uniton by defaultJapanese / English

A bare number where the other values in its column all have a unit

Example

Flagged
# Costs | Item | Cost | | --- | --- | | Train | $600 | | Hotel | 960 | | Taxi | $100 |
What chaff prints
6:11 "960" has no unit (the other "Cost" values carry "$")
Fixed
# Costs | Item | Cost | | --- | --- | | Train | $600 | | Hotel | $960 | | Taxi | $100 |
What chaff prints
no finding

How to fix

Write the unit. If every value in a column shares it, you can move it to the header ("Amount ($)") and drop it from the values.

Why it matters

Every other value in the same table column, or under the same label ("Budget:"), carries a unit, and this one is a bare number. The reader has to guess whether it is dollars or thousands, minutes or hours. In prose too, when a document writes a word of scale (million, thousand, billion) with a unit many times ("$83 million"), the one number written with that word and no unit ("83 million") is pointed out.

What it does not flag

Reported only when at least two other values carry one and the same unit. A column where bare numbers are the majority, one that mixes units (minutes and hours), and values that are not numbers (TBD) are not checked. A unit written in the header ("Amount ($)") is not read. In a Quantity column whose other values are a hired period (4 days, 2 nights), a bare whole number (Child seat | 1) is a count of pieces and is not reported. In prose, a word of scale is checked only when the document gives it one and the same unit at least five times and has no other bare number with it. A document that states "(in millions of dollars)" and writes "million" alone throughout, one with two units for the word ("$5 million" and "5 million shares"), and one unit serving two numbers ("from $1.1 million to 1.3 million") are not reported.
